A few years ago I spent three hundred dollars on a sleeping bag that a dozen "best of" lists swore was the one. It was fine. It was also, I later realized, the bag that paid the most in commissions. That stung — not because of the money, but because I'd trusted the wrong people.
So I started doing the homework myself. Reading every spec sheet, every teardown, every grumpy one-star review. Then actually taking the gear outside, because a spec sheet has never once spent a cold night on a ridge. What started as notes for friends became this site.
"I'd rather lose the commission than lose your trust. That's the whole business model."
Here's my promise. No brand pays for a ranking. No product gets a higher score because it earns us more. If something's overpriced or overhyped, I'll tell you — even when there's an affiliate link two inches away. And if I haven't actually used it, I'll say that too.
My wife Linda is the secret weapon. She's the one who cuts through my over-thinking with a sentence — "it's heavy and the zipper sticks" — and she's usually right. When you see "Linda-verified," that's the highest honor we give.
Commissions keep the lights on. They have zero influence on rankings. The cheapest pick wins as often as the priciest.
If we haven't put real miles on it, we say so plainly. Hands-on always beats a spec sheet.
