When Linda's Basic Jacket Outperformed My Technical Layer

The short version

Linda and Grant both got caught in the same rain. Linda had her regular jacket. Grant had his fourth and best rain jacket. Here is what happened. See full review →

In December, Linda and I walked to dinner in what was predicted to be light rain and became substantial rain for approximately forty minutes of the walk back. This was not an outdoor adventure — it was dinner, four blocks from our house. The conditions were nevertheless informative.

Linda was wearing her North Face Resolve jacket. It's a DWR-coated polyester jacket with a seam-sealed hood. She bought it in 2018. The DWR coating has been re-applied once. It is the jacket she wears when it rains.

I was wearing my Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket — 2.5L GORE-TEX, 100g packweight, the jacket I have described in multiple reviews as representing the best rain performance per ounce available under $200.

What Happened

Both of us arrived home dry. Linda's jacket and my jacket both performed their waterproofing function during forty minutes of substantial rain. Neither of us got wet. Linda's jacket cost $129 in 2018. My jacket cost $189 in 2024. The outcome in this scenario was identical.

The Technical Distinction

The GORE-TEX jacket's superiority would have been apparent in three to four hours of sustained rain, in conditions below 40 degrees, or if I had been exerting enough to require the breathability advantage. At moderate exertion in forty-minute moderate rain at 48 degrees, the technical advantage is not observable at the outcome level.

I explained this to Linda. She said "sure." She was already making tea. I confirmed this to myself, at length, while also making tea. The tea was the same quality regardless of which jacket either of us was wearing.
