The short version

Five rain jackets evaluated. The technical case for and against each. Linda's opinion included at the end. See full review →

I currently own five rain jackets. I will evaluate each one honestly, including the two I bought primarily because the research was interesting.

Outdoor Research Helium Rain Jacket (2.5L GORE-TEX, $189): The highest technical performance per ounce in the collection. Appropriate for sustained rain at any temperature, extended exertion, or conditions requiring genuine breathability. Not appropriate for casual use — it is too minimal and its DWR shows wear faster than more casual jackets at the same price point.

Patagonia Torrentshell 3L ($179): My second-most technical jacket and my most-used. The 3-layer construction is more durable than the Helium. The fit is better for everyday wear. Linda has asked to borrow it twice, which is the only usage-based endorsement in my collection.

Arc'teryx Beta AR ($599): The most expensive jacket in the collection. The GORE-TEX Pro construction is legitimate. The fit and build quality justify the price for professional outdoor guides or people who are in extended precipitation conditions regularly. For a person whose rain exposure is primarily commuting and neighborhood walks, the $599 premium returns approximately zero additional value over the Torrentshell.

North Face Resolve Jacket ($129): Identical to Linda's jacket except newer. I bought this to understand why her jacket performs adequately. It performs adequately. The DWR is functional. The construction is simple and durable. This is what a rain jacket needs to be for most people.

Helium II (100g, $189): The ultra-packable option. 100g. Fits in a chest pocket. The most impressive packability-to-protection ratio in the collection. Has been used twice, both times on trips where I thought I might need it and didn't.

Linda's opinion, when I showed her this list: "Five jackets." I confirmed the number. She said "okay." This is the Rosetta Stone of Linda's communication style. It means she has noted the information and drawn a conclusion she has chosen not to share.
