The Research and the Reality

Grant evaluated thirteen hiking boots across six criteria before selecting the Merrell Moab 3 GTX. The May trip provided the first field data. The data confirmed the research: the Moab 3 GTX performed as the specifications predicted across the conditions encountered.

What the GTX Means

GTX denotes GORE-TEX waterproofing. The Moab 3 GTX keeps water out in standard hiking conditions — stream crossings under ankle depth, rain, and wet vegetation. For serious wet conditions (above ankle crossings, extended submersion), the GORE-TEX lining eventually saturates. Grant's Olympic Peninsula trip included one creek crossing to ankle depth. The boots remained dry throughout.

The Vibram Outsole

The Moab 3 uses Vibram TC5+ rubber for the outsole. Vibram is the standard for serious hiking boot outsoles — the same company makes soles for many premium boot brands. The TC5+ compound has good wet traction on the rock types common in Pacific Northwest hiking. Grant walked across two sections of wet rock. No slippage was observed.

Best for you if...
  • You want one boot for most trail conditions
  • You need waterproof protection in wet terrain
  • You are doing moderate hikes on established trails
Not for you if...
  • You need technical scrambling or mountaineering
  • You want ultralight trail running shoes
  • You have very wide feet (size up or look at wider options)

Pros

  • Gore-Tex waterproofing keeps water out in standard conditions
  • Vibram TC5+ outsole provides reliable wet traction
  • Moab heritage: well-established trail record
  • Mid height offers ankle support without excessive weight
  • Available in multiple widths

Cons

  • Gore-Tex adds weight versus non-waterproof versions
  • Not ideal for technical scrambling (lack of toe protection)
  • Requires break-in period of 20-30 miles
  • Gore-Tex eventually saturates in prolonged submersion

Frequently Asked Questions

How do Merrell Moab 3 fit?
True to size for most users. The toe box is medium width. Wide-footed hikers should try the Wide version (2E) or the non-GTX version which has slightly more give. Break in before a long trip.
How long does the Gore-Tex last?
Gore-Tex waterproofing typically remains effective for 500-1000 miles. Washing and re-proofing with DWR treatment extends the life. The outsole usually wears out before the waterproofing.
Merrell Moab 3 vs Salomon X Ultra 4?
The Salomon X Ultra 4 has a more athletic fit and Contagrip outsole optimized for technical trails. The Moab 3 has a more traditional trail feel and wider fit. Both are excellent. Foot shape usually determines the preference.
Are the Merrell Moab 3 good for backpacking?
Yes for three-season trails. For technical off-trail terrain or heavy pack loads, a stiffer sole (like La Sportiva or Scarpa leather boots) provides better support. For maintained trails with a 35 lb pack: Moab 3 is appropriate.
How much do the Merrell Moab 3 weigh?
Approximately 2 lbs (32 oz) per pair in size 10. Lightweight for a mid hiking boot.
