The Hiking Boot Deep Dive

I evaluated thirteen hiking boots before selecting the Merrell Moab 3 GTX (See Grant's full review →). The evaluation criteria: waterproofing, ankle support level (mid vs low), outsole traction pattern, weight, break-in period based on published reviews, and Vibram vs proprietary outsole performance data from third-party testing.

The Merrell Moab 3 GTX scored highest on my weighted criteria matrix, which I will describe as a six-by-thirteen table with scores in each cell and column weights based on importance for Pacific Northwest three-season hiking.

What the Research Shows

The Merrell Moab 3 improves on the Moab 2 in forefoot flex and outsole compound. Both improvements are documented in gear review publications I cross-referenced. The Gore-Tex lining is verified waterproof to the standard Gore-Tex testing criteria. The Vibram TC5+ outsole performs well on wet rock based on comparative testing data I found in two independent sources.

I have worn the Merrell Moab 3 GTX for a combined total of approximately eleven hours — four in the gear room during the unboxing and initial fit evaluation, three on a neighborhood walk I conducted to test the break-in progression, and four on a longer walk I took specifically to confirm the heel lock and toe box performance in motion.

Linda's Assessment

Linda saw the Merrells in the gear room and asked if I was planning a hike. I said I was in the research phase. She said they looked comfortable. They are comfortable. She has been hiking in her 2020 pair for six years and showed me where the outsole is beginning to wear. I told her the Moab 3 would be a suitable replacement. She said she'd look at them when she needed new boots. She does not appear to need new boots yet.
