Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp Review (2026)

Black Diamond Spot 400 provides 400-lumen maximum output, a red night vision mode that preserves dark adaptation, PowerTap technology for instant dim/bright toggle, and runs 200 hours on a single battery set. It's the headlamp that replaced every competitor for most backpackers.

The short version

Black Diamond Spot 400 has been the default backpacking headlamp recommendation for a decade. We researched the 400-lumen claim and compared it to the Petzl Actik Core.

Who it's for

Buy this if: All backpackers — it's the correct headlamp for every use case from camp cooking to night hiking.

Skip this if: No one. Every hiker needs a headlamp; this one is the right choice.

In the field

PowerTap Technology

PowerTap allows changing brightness without cycling through modes — press and hold while the light is on to dim; release to lock brightness. Switching from full power (trail running) to low power (camp reading) is one gesture. Competitors require multiple button presses or mode cycling.

Red Mode

Human eyes require 20+ minutes to fully dark-adapt. White light instantly resets dark adaptation. Red light (650nm) doesn't reset rod cell adaptation — you can use a red-mode headlamp all night and still see stars clearly. Essential for night photography and for not disturbing camp partners.

What we loved
+ 400 lumens for night hiking, 10 lumens for camp use — full range+ Red mode preserves night vision for stargazing and animal observation+ IPX8 waterproof (submersible to 1.1m)+ 200-hour runtime on AAA batteries
What we'd change
3 AAA batteries vs. Petzl's rechargeable (ongoing battery cost)

Common questions

Spot 400 vs. Spot 400-R (rechargeable)?
400-R uses a built-in USB-rechargeable battery — eliminates battery replacement. Trade-off: if the charge dies in the field with no USB access, you're in the dark. Most backpackers prefer the AAA battery flexibility.
How far does 400 lumens reach?
Approximately 100m beam distance on maximum. For trail running: adequate. For technical navigation: optimal. For camp use: set to 10 lumens.
