Black Diamond Spot 400 Headlamp Review (2026) — Grant's Honest Take
Our Verdict
Grant's third headlamp. The Spot 400 is the one Linda stopped complaining about.

Grant's first headlamp was a $15 unit that produced inadequate lumens for trail use and died in light rain. His second was a premium headlamp that was technically superior but had a control interface that required reading the manual in the field at 2am — which Grant did, in the field, at 2am, on the Olympic Peninsula. The Spot 400 has one button. Grant has used it correctly every time without consulting documentation.
The 400 Lumen Difference
Grant tested the Spot 400 against his previous 200-lumen headlamp on the same trail section at night. At 400 lumens, trail obstacles were visible at a distance that allowed normal walking pace. At 200 lumens, the trail was visible but required reduced pace on technical sections. For hiking, 400 lumens is the threshold below which Grant noticed compromised confidence. For camp use, 150 lumens is sufficient.
Linda's Assessment
Grant and Linda share the Spot 400 on trips. Linda's previous assessment of Grant's headlamps: "the button doesn't make sense" (headlamp two) and "why does it keep blinking" (also headlamp two). Her assessment of the Spot 400: no verbal feedback. Grant interprets this as approval. Linda has since purchased her own Spot 400 for solo use. Grant considers this the definitive endorsement.
IPX8 Waterproofing
The Spot 400 is rated IPX8 — submersible to 1 meter for 30 minutes. Grant has not submerged it intentionally, but it has been worn in sustained rain for 3+ hours without any function degradation. The IPX8 rating is the relevant specification for hiking in variable weather conditions. Many cheaper headlamps are rated IP44, which is insufficient for sustained rain exposure.
